Bamboo Museum

About

India's only dedicated Bamboo Museum in Palampur, developed for the Institute of Himalayan Bio-resource Technology, showcases bamboo's versatility in construction and interiors while prioritizing sustainability, local materials, and visitor experience. Exposed bamboo and wood blend the structure into its wooded landscape, with three pyramid-like bamboo-clad forms creating a distinctive silhouette above the building.

A central glazed dome floods the core with daylight, while the exhibition hall and passages use Bamboo Mat Corrugated Sheets (BMCS) to demonstrate engineered applications. Bamboo Crete walls feature varied interior finishes—plaster, round bamboo, and Bamboo Mat Boards—and exposed external detailing for texture and integration. Red/black cement oxide flooring ensures durability.

Doors combine Bamboo Mat Boards with glazing; structural wood uses local neem and seasoned timbers. This material-driven design establishes a regional precedent for ecological, context-responsive architecture.
