About

Revitalizing Public Spaces focuses on strengthening the social and ecological character of Jakkur and the surrounding neighborhoods of North Bangalore. The proposal reimagines streets, parks, junctions, and residual spaces as active public environments that support everyday interaction, local livelihoods, and ecological resilience. A key intervention addresses the unsafe conditions created by the underpass near the former Srirampura Railway Crossing, restoring safe pedestrian movement and reconnecting adjacent neighborhoods through redesigned pathways, crossings, and traffic-calming measures. Beyond mobility, parks and open grounds are upgraded with shaded seating, play and fitness areas, informal gathering zones, and spaces for local vendors and markets. Environmental strategies such as bamboo plantations, native landscaping, and improved stormwater systems enhance microclimate and urban biodiversity, while upgraded lighting, bus shelters, water points, and sanitation facilities improve comfort and safety. Rather than imposing a new identity, the proposal builds on existing social life, landscape, and neighborhood rhythms.

Using the framework developed by Greater Bangalore Authority (GBA), our four proposals in Jakkur/Thanisandra transform underused public spaces into happy, equitable, and climate-responsive community assets.
