Beautification of Cubbon Park

About

Prepared as a competition proposal for the Department of Horticulture, Government of Karnataka, the project envisions the beautification and infrastructure development of Cubbon Park and its surrounding institutional precincts, including Vidhana Soudha, within a sustainable landscape framework. Building on the park’s historic identity as Bengaluru’s central “lung space,” the master plan addresses contemporary environmental and public-use needs through rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, solid waste management, alternative energy installations and upgraded amenities.

The proposal conserves Cubbon Park’s botanical assets, heritage monuments, sculptures, existing landscape character and pedestrian-oriented environment while encouraging walking and cycling. Interventions range from restored pathways and new pedestrian trails to stone pergolas, bamboo gazebos, eco-friendly bamboo toilets, picnic pads, a green theatre, flower mounds, rock and Zen gardens, lotus pools, fountains and native planting. Existing water bodies are revitalised through desilting, canal improvements, drainage systems and tank renovation, complemented by bamboo railings, parking, food kiosks, security and first-aid facilities, seating, lighting and environmental improvements around key landmarks. Together, these measures enhance visitor experience, strengthen ecological performance and preserve the heritage character of one of Bengaluru’s most significant public parks.
