Yamuna Biodiversity Park

About

Located in northern New Delhi, the Yamuna Biodiversity Park is part of an effort to restore the ecological health of the Yamuna River Basin. Commissioned by the DDA, Biodiversity Foundation, and the University of Delhi, the project uses bamboo as its principal material in keeping with the park’s environmental intent.

The development comprises three key elements: a bamboo bridge, a gazebo, and a public amenities block. The 15-metre bridge is built on an arched truss system using solid and hollow bamboo, and was assembled in just 20 days. Designed to meet IRC-6-2000 loading requirements, it demonstrates bamboo’s structural potential in bridge construction. The gazebo, with its hot–cold treated bamboo tiles and interlocking nail-free joints, offers a compact resting space for visitors.

The public amenities block is particularly notable as the first public toilet in India constructed in bamboo. With bamboo used for the superstructure and cement limited to the flooring, the project reflects a careful approach to low-energy, natural material use in public infrastructure.
