Lakefall

About

Lakefall is a sculptural light fixture designed for the 10‑12 metre-high atrium of Ar. Prof. Neelam Manjunath’s own residence, “House of Five Elements.” It hangs as a centrepiece over the courtyard, visible across the basement, ground and first floor. Conceived as an inverted lake, it integrates natural rain, artificial light, sound and movement into one multisensory installation. Brass lotus flowers in various stages of bloom house the light sources, while copper lotus leaves of different sizes, along with stems hung with brass chains and colourless wiring, glass teardrop beads and crystals suggest falling water and vegetation. Rain travels along small bell-tipped brass chains, finally dropping into a totti (water body) and spilling over onto rocks and vegetation and a water body at the basement level. During rains, the entire system—from the “lake bed” at the atrium roof to the basement pool—becomes an immersive experience of shimmering reflections, delicate chimes and the sensation of a star-studded natural lake descending from the sky.
